Introduction
The history of Canada is riddled with cultural injustices, one specifically being the mistreatment of indigenous people. During the development to modernize North America, the indigenous were not heard as the government did not take into account how this was negatively impacting them. Now, Canada is pushing for indigenous equality which includes their health care. This basic right has been a point of discrimination for the indigenous people in Canada. I hope to make a change to this underlying issue in my future as my goal is to work in health care.
Growing up, I have always been a hardworking kid when it came to sports and academics. I was influenced by seeing my dad go through medical school and working extremely hard to be where he is today. I want to do the same by pursuing a career in medicine. Health care, like many other professions, has an imperfect system where racist polices can be used against people of colour. In Canada, this is a big issue for indigenous people who get discriminated against daily. I hope that with my future in medicine I will be able to make meaningful change to hopefully make a safer Environment for indigenous people in Canada. As I go further into my own education, I wonder about where the medical system currently is in regards to treatment of indigenous people in Canada. What discrimination have they faced already, what has been done, and what more could be done? |
